Position Summary:

The Trauma Registrar is responsible for abstracting data from electronic medical records and other sources and entering that data into the trauma registry. This role is instrumental in establishing supportive documentation qualifying Elliot Health System as an American College of Surgeons (ACS) verified trauma center. The incumbent will report directly to the Trauma Program Manager, with supervision and oversight from the Trauma Analyst or Senior Trauma Registrar.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Employees are expected to work consistently to demonstrate the mission, vision, beliefs, core values and standards of behavior of the organization.

• Accurately enters demographic and visit information into the trauma registry for every trauma patient that meets criteria.

• Maintain registry current as defined by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) as 80% complete within sixty (60) days of patient discharge.

• Determine appropriateness of patient entry into the Trauma Registry based on guidelines in the National Trauma Data Standard.

• Under the direction of the Senior Trauma Registrar and/or Trauma Analyst, participate in data validation and improvement activities to ensure accuracy of data collection.

• Understand basic mapping concepts and validate mapping of registry software for Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP), National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB), and the State of New Hampshire.

• Resolve routine coding issues/problems and appropriately seeks assistance from Senior Trauma Registrar/Trauma Analyst or program leadership.

• Recognize patterns of mechanism and injury during case abstraction to contribute to opportunities for injury prevention and community safety.

• Accurate and comprehensive injury coding following ICD 10 and AIS standards.

• Assist in preparing charts in preparation for the American College of Surgeons (ASC) Trauma Consultation and Verification surveys.

• Ensure appropriate measures are in place and maintained to meet confidentiality and compliance with HIPPA requirements of trauma data and files.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Position is primarily remote but may occasionally require in person attendance at the discretion of the Trauma Program Manager.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Minimally required:

High school diploma or equivalent required. An additional two years of the required experience below can be substituted for the required degree.

Preferred:

Associate degree in Health Information Management or a closely related field preferred.

Licensure/certification

Minimally Required:

AAAMs Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) course within one year of hire required.

American Trauma Society trauma registry course required within one year of hire.

ICD-10 course completion required with ICD-10 refresher course every five (5) years required.

Ability to accrue at least 24-hours of trauma-related CE during the three (3) year verification cycle required.

Preferred:

Certified Specialist in Trauma Registries (CSTR) preferred.

Certified Abbreviated Injury Scale Specialist (CAISS), within one year of hire, preferred

Coding certification preferred.

Experience

Minimally Required:

A minimum of one-three years of healthcare experience in trauma, critical care, emergency department

or medical coding experience required.

Knowledge

Minimally Required:

Knowledge of data abstraction and data validation techniques.

Skills

Measurable learnings (e.g., Intermediate level of Excel and Word).

Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite. Strong organizational skills. Strong attention to detail.
