Pathology Support Assistant in Histology Lab Department | Per Diem (as needed) day shift weekdays between 8AM-4PM. No weekends.
About the Elliot Hospital Laboratory:
The Elliot Hospital Laboratory is a full service 24/7 operation. We are both CAP and AABB accredited. In addition to traditional inpatient and outpatient work, the laboratory supports a Level II trauma center, Level III NICU, High Risk Maternity unit, three urgent cares, two cancer centers, a community health center and approximately 60 nursing and assisted living facilities. Our yearly billable volume is approximately 1.6 million tests.
In addition, our Blood bank is an American Red Cross Blood depot for the State of New Hampshire, supporting other hospital with urgent blood product needs.
About the Job
The Pathology Support Assistant will perform administrative duties and record keeping functions related to the Pathology department, including but not limited to, computer and data entry, typing, transcription, filing, coding, generating reports, answering telephone and general office work.
What You’ll Do
- Provide support functions for pathology, autopsy and bone marrow reports including entering clinical histories, intraoperative diagnosis from specimen requisitions and scanning requisitions into Epic.
- Perform charge review on signed-out cases, resolve coding and billing questions for the pathologists’ billing company and Elliot Hospital Revenue Integrity Department.
- Review case Final Diagnoses and add applicable Flags in Epic Beaker to track malignances and other categorical data.
- Place authorized orders for reference lab testing in the patients EMR.
- Prepare case materials and professional correspondence as needed for outgoing consultations.
- Accession and distribute incoming consult cases.
- Maintain files and document the movement of blocks, reports, tissue, etc. sent through use of tracking events and packing lists in Epic.
- Monitor frozen sections, cytology/tissue correlations, outside consultations and intradepartmental consultations as part of the Pathology department’s Quality Assurance program.
- Organize conference/tumor board cases for Pathologists.
- Respond to inquiries, procedure notifications and other requests, notifying appropriate staff.
- Prepare and distribute pathologist coverage schedule in cooperation with the pathology medical group.
- Enter recuts and other slide orders from the Histology Lab as needed.
- Order supplies, such as kits for send-testing, shipping materials and office supplies.
What You’ll Need
High School diploma or equivalent required. A minimum of two (2) years related experience required, of which included experience with medical terminology. Previous experience with pathology billing preferred.
